Forum & Expo: Tools for STEM Education … Preparations and Applications for Elementary and Middle School Educators

Elementary and middle school educators face unique challenges and extraordinary opportunities to build foundational skills and inspire interest in STEM. How can you do this more successfully? What role do informal groups play in STEM development?

The main focus of the STEM Forum & Expo is geared toward the elementary and middle school levels, where it all begins! However, input and considerations from high school, preservice, college, and university educators, and administrators are essential. After all, we need your feedback to best identify the STEM skill sets that students are lacking when they reach the high school and college levels and to pinpoint ways in which administrators can cultivate the development of successful STEM programs in elementary and middle schools.

The successful implementation of STEM education is "partnership dependent." If you are a stakeholder, you will want to submit a proposal for consideration and/or plan to register for this unique opportunity, which is scheduled at the Atlantic City Convention Center.

Please check back in early October for housing information.

Recording a Voki

What's more fun than learning about a new Web 2.0 tool for the classroom? Learning about six! During the week of January 18th, fresh off an unexpected week off due to the "Blizzard of 2011", Dekalb Co GA teachers dug right in and explored a variety of Web 2.0 tools for content creation. Their goal? To become familiar enough with these interactive, engaging, student centered instructional tools to be able to bring them back to their school sites and inspire the rest of their staff. It was an aggressive task but no one minded because it was so much fun!

Siemens STEM Institute Welcomes Fellows

Fifty excited educators gathered in Silver Spring MD tonight for the kick-off of the premiere Siemens STEM Institute. The afternoon started with tours of 1 Discovery Plaza, national headquarters of Discovery Education and the site for an exciting week of networking, professional development and brainstorming all things STEM. "Ice" was broken with a great activity involving a "cardapult" which really got the participants working together.
Dinner was followed by the Keynote Speaker, Dr Alan Leshner, who enthralled the group with his comments regarding "Science for all". Dr. Leshner emphasized that total integration of science, technology, engineering and math with real world applications is the ONLY way to reach those "middle of the road" disenfranchised students. "In order to thrive in the modern world, EVERYONE must be familiar with science". "It ain't just about taking care of the highest pool" was his way of saying that we have to make sure that our energies meet the needs of all students, not just those who are the best and the brightest. Following the keynote participants had an opportunity for further networking as they shared their "state-themed" gifts. As one fellow posted on the group sharing page... "An awesome start to a very great week! Thank you!"
